Chitwan is yet another example of Nepal’s diversity. During our travels around Nepal, we’ve spent a night at the mountain lodge in Nagarkot, enjoyed the urban environment of Kathmandu and the adrenaline adventure on the wild river. You can read about those more closely in my previous blog on 7 Worth-Seeing Places to Visit in Nepal. In this post I would like to focus on what to do in Chitwan.

We arrived to the green lowlands, to the wet jungle of the National Park. It was impossible to miss the entrance to the NP area. Road was lined with warning signs indicating presence of wild rhinos and tigers. Wild boars, crocodiles and leopards lived there as well, however, no one warned us about them.

Here is my recommendation for perfect accommodation and activities to do in this wild region.

Accommodation in Sauraha resort

When we arrived to Sauraha resort, except for a nice smiling Nepali guy, unbreathable heavy air welcomed us. Immediately after getting off the bus, sweat started pouring down every part of my body and stopped only when we left this territory three days later. In the middle of summer, during the monsoon season, humidity reaches the highest values. In my humble opinion it must be only little under 100%! On the contrary, the accommodation was a nice surprise. Resort was newly built and consisted of two-storey cabins that lined around the garden. Large lawn turned into a stage for the evening where local men performed for us their traditional martial dance. Anyway, for me, delicious dinner in the form of Nepali and European dishes was the highlight of the whole evening. It was so yummy! 🙂

Jungle safari in Chitwan

Chitwan National Park is known for countless activities which are in store for tourists. We began with “chasing” the rhinos. We went to the river where they usually stay and observed them from the opposite bank (to stay safe). Our proactivity and fighting our way through the jungle led us to success. At last, we spotted a rhino family!

what to do in Chitwan

At noon, we met with elephants and one of my dreams came true. First we visited the local Elephant Camp where we saw a three months old baby elephant. It was like another of my dreams came true :). Our program in the company of elephants continued and we could witness their bath in the local creek. The brave ones joined them in the water and watched from a close distance. It was beautiful to see the joy they played with. They played together, splashed the water, they were happy and their eyes sparkled. This became one of the most emotional moments of the whole trip. I recommend to all elephant (or animal) lovers.

Chitwan is famous for many animal species that live on its territory. So, we closed our stay here with the activity involving animals. Again. We enjoyed the cruise on a river. However, the vessel wasn’t ordinary, but carved into a tree trunk. Seated in a row we went on a wobbly expedition, every slight movement caused rocking of the whole vessel. Cameras, however, were allowed, so we weren’t afraid that the vessel can topple. During half an hour of meditation, we spotted seven crocodiles. For our better experience and surge of adrenaline, locals forgot to mention that they are Gavials. The point? They are not dangerous for humans 🙂

Love & happy travels,
RLT
