When I was planning my trip to Singapore, I was told that 3 days are enough. So, I booked my flights with 7 days apart. Just in case. I usually want to see as much as I can and there are attractions in Singapore that take time. I put together the list of my favorite 6 places to visit in Singapore. You can see them comfortably in 4 days. If you add two more days, you can even make two day-trips to nearby cities (read until the end 😉 )
Sentosa Island
Sentosa is an island that you can access from Singapore’s mainland by a road, pedestrian broadwalk, monorail or even a cable car. If you’re not afraid of heights, I truly recommend the last possibility. You will have the view of the whole city and enjoy an adventurous ride. You can take cable car one way, best during a day and return to mainland by a different mean of transport. I used monorail in the evening, when it was dark already.
Sentosa offers to visitors many things to see and do. You will find there theme attractions, sandy beaches, rain forests, spa treatment and luxurious accommodation. You can spend there one full day (or even more) just like that.
To spend your day on Sentosa efficiently, visit the official Sentosa website and plan your trip. I recommend to take a cable car from Mount Faber. They operate daily from 8:45am until 9:30pm. And the ticket is approx. 30 SGD. However, check the website before going, you will find there most up-to-date information as well as other ways how to get to the island 😉
You can plan in advance, which attraction you want to visit. Make sure you will take an island map once on Sentosa in order not to get lost 🙂 I recommend to visit the Merlion plaza and the Merlion tower. I fell in love with Silos and Palawan beaches. There is a suspension bridge you can take to a little island with two wooden towers. That is also where the Southernmost Point of Continental Asia is marked.
There are countless restaurants, cafes and fast food possibilities on the island. Take can attend many public events taking place at various parts of the island. It is up to you, what you will choose and enjoy. 😉
Universal Studios
If you are visiting Singapore, Universal Studios is a must! I believe you know it is a theme park and it is situated on the Sentosa island as well. Price of the regular one-day ticket is 79 SGD per adult. You can find there more than fifteen attractions and I am not sure you want me to reveal them. Just to mention, Transformers Ultimate 3D Battle is amazing! Jurassic Park Rapids Adventure™ wasn’t full of action, but there was one very funny moment totally worth of your visit. 😀 Battlestar Galactica: HUMAN vs. CYLON™, the biggest attraction, was closed during my visit. So if you are lucky enough to get there, please leave me a comment how it was. 🙂
Except for these mostly adult attractions, you can find there many attractions for kids and their parents as well. Plus there are many souvenir shops, restaurants and cafes to spend some time at and relax.
Gardens by the Bay
Gardens by the Bay are rated Number 1 Attraction in Singapore on Trip Advisor. It is a vast area full of various plants and flowers of all colors. If you are a big fan of botanical gardens, you will need probably full day to explore all the attractions. My favorite is the walk on Supertree Grove & OCBC Skyway. I also recommend to visit the Cloud forest and Flower dome. Those are the two glass houses you can see on all the Garden by the Bay pictures. However, you can also visit Serene garden and have a stroll around Dragonfly and Kingfisher lakes.
To plan your visit, check the opening hours and admission fees, visit the Gardens by the Bay official website.
Marina Bay Sands
Iconic “landmark” of Singapore. You’ve seen it probably on postcards, photos from Singapore, in TV. Marina Bay Sands is a combination of luxurious hotel, fancy shopping opportunities and a famous infinity pool at the rooftop. If you travel on budget, you might want to avoid staying at the Marina Bay Sands hotel. 😉 However, you can go to the shopping mall. Except for some designer boutiques, you can admire it’s interior while enjoying pleasant A/C and a cup of coffee.
One-of-a-kind infinity-edged pool is closed to public. Unfortunately, only hotel guests can enjoy the amazing view of the city. However, you can visit the Sands SkyPark and peek inside the pool area. 😉 From the observation desk you can enjoy the 360-degree view of Singapore. You can also recharge energy with small snacks, coffee or beer. With the view. 🙂
Orchard Road
For all the shopaholics, I can’t omit to mention Singapore’s popular Orchard Road. It is famous for its world-class dining possibilities, coffee houses and drink bars. Even more for all the shopping complexes and futuristic-looking malls. You can find there everything starting with the high street fashion to the most luxurious brands. Museum and galleries are no exception. You can visit the Grande Whisky Collection with more than 4500 whiskies, or ION Art Gallery hosting international as well as local exhibitions.
One important note. Please keep in mind, that since January 2019, Orchard Road became a No Smoking Zone. If you are a smoker, look for designated smoking area in order to avoid a fine. You can read more about what is illegal in Singapore and what are the consequences in my previous article 4 Essential Tips to Survive in Singapore. Just to be safe. 😉
Level33 Rooftop Bar
Before my trip to Singapore, I haven’t heard about this bar. I’ve learned about it only thanks to my friend you who lived there for couple years. Level33 is a rooftop microbrewery in Marina Bay that you can’t miss during your visit! If you’re visiting during the highest tourist season, make sure you book your table in advance. I believe you wish to sit on the outside terrace and enjoy the panoramic view of the Marina Bay Sands, the Singapore Flyer as well as the rest skyscrapers of Central Business District, where the bar is located. To enjoy this stay to the fullest, you can order a beer from the selection of their home-brewed craft ales.
There are still many attractions I didn’t have time to explore myself. In case you have some spare time during your stay in Singapore, check out Singapore Flyer, ArtScience Museum, Singapore Night Safari or Singapore Zoo.
Day-trips from Singapore
Singapore has an amazing location. Situated in the southern part of Malaysia and in the middle of Southeast Asia, you have perfect accessibility to many travellers’ favourite destinations! You can continue your trip and travel to Krabi, Thailand. Flight takes two hours and it is very enjoyable when there is no storm outside 😀 Bali is close too, flight takes 3 hours. However, you will need to allocate more days to explore these destinations and relax to the fullest.
However, there are two cities that are great for one-day trip. Both Kuala Lumpur and Jakarta are only one-hour flight away. There are direct flights to both cities, flight tickets are not expensive and you can manage to see a lot in one day. 😉
Kuala Lumpur
I visited Kuala Lumpur twice and I believe it should be on your travel bucket list. Mostly, when you are in the neighbourhood, it would be a shame to miss its visit. That is the reason why I recommend you to take a trip from Singapore, event just for one day.
What do you think is a number one must-see attraction in Kuala Lumpur? It’s Petronas Towers, of course! Plan ahead, what you want to see in its area, as there is a lot to do. You can actually visit the towers and visit the Skybridge and Observation Deck. Before your visit, check the operation hours and admission fee at the Petronas Twin Towers official website. They are closed on Mondays and during some holidays, but this may change. Except for the Towers, you can lost yourself inside the Suria KLCC shopping centre situated right beneath the towers. Or, you can wander around the KLCC park and watch the Symphony Lake Water Show. During day, it is refreshing. Yet beautiful in the evening when it’s dark outside.
Have you heard about Menara Kuala Lumpur or KL Tower? It is my second tip for your visit. It is located relatively close to Petronas Towers. Just be careful, it lies inside a park and there is only one entrance. If you miss it, you will need to circle it around and that takes a lot of time. You can buy a ticket and go to the top of the tower. You will have wonderful view of the whole city lying beneath you.
Depending on how much time you have left, you can visit either Central Market or National Mosque of Malaysia. I recommend the latter one 😉
If you plan to visit Kuala Lumpur for more days, you can look forward to my next blog article. It will be dedicated to my stay in KL. 😉
Jakarta
Flight from Singapore to Jakarta takes about one hour as well. However, in the opposite direction as Kuala Lumpur. When you catch the early morning flight and the return one in the late evening, you have one day for sightseeing. There is a shuttle bus from airport which will take you to the Gambir train station in the city centre. It is an old coach crowded with too many people, however, with functional wifi! 😉 The train station is in fenced area, so don’t get lost when trying to find your way out. 🙂
Right next to the Gambir Stasiun, there is the famous National Monument. You can find it under the name Monas, short for Monumen Nasional. It is situated in the middle of Merdeka Square. It belongs among the largest squares in the world. At least you can stretch your legs after the flight and bus drive. 😉 The monument tower commemorates the fight for Indonesian independence.
Nearby you can visit Istana Merdeka. It is the residency of Indonesian President. It is closed to public, yet you can admire it from the outside. 😉
To see the modern part of the city, you can continue from the Merdeka Square to Jalan M.H. Thamrin in the direction of Selamat Datang Monument. You can stop at the Plaza Indonesia Shopping Center. After passing entrance controls, you can check some stores, have a cup of coffee and enjoy the air conditioning. 😀
You can head towards Jalan Surabaya, where you will find the main Flea Market. You can buy there various goods, mostly crafts and textiles.
If Singapore sounds like a perfect destination for you, I recommend that you read also my article on 4 Essential Tips to Survive in Singapore. You will find there useful information regarding your trip, mostly what to be aware of when travelling to Singapore.
Love & happy travels,
